Difficult, because the very intensity of the misery one must render an account of runs the risk of provoking a feeling of strangeness in the reader. As it is, the longer my stay among the Hurdanos lasted, what at first sight appeared to be the bizarre and disconcerting aspects of their life diminished, leaving me only the broadest testimony of man’s dependence on what he produces and the way in which he produces it.”
